Going-to-the-Sun Road Rehabilitation

Project Description

The Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park was built in 1932, and is a narrow 52-mile paved highway. The National Park Service and Federal Highway Administration were completing road rehabilitation and wall preservation along this historic highway. One of the major work elements of the project was the repairing of stone retaining walls that had deteriorated over time.

Crux’s Role

The purpose of this project was to determine wall integrity, backfill materials and depth to bedrock. Crux utilized components from two separate drill rigs, along with a custom platform – all designed and fabricated in-house – to drill numerous horizontal holes below road grade. To accomplish this project safely and productively, the platform was designed to attach to a 320L CAT excavator while supporting a drill and two crew members.

Crux completed drilling on this scenic, historic road with zero impact to the wall. Impact to traffic was minimized by closing only one lane of traffic. This safe and efficient method allowed for higher production and valuable data collection.
