Crux Completes Additional Foundations Under Active Lines

Published on Back To Index

Crux Subsurface, Inc. (Crux) has completed the second phase of work for Hawaiian Electric’s Koolau-Wailupe #1 and #2 46 kV Circuits in Oahu, Hawaii.

The second portion of the project involved installing an additional four micropile foundations for tubular steel pole structures. Crux was selected to perform additional services due to difficulty in accessing the foundation sites. Drilling activities took place while overhead lines were still in-service and crew members had to maintain high levels of communication with helicopter pilots during periods of strong winds, fog, and rain.

The first phase was completed in early January and included replacing nine wooden structures. Crux partnered with sister company Road Bore Corp. to provide foundation design and installation services for the project. Due to the rugged and steep terrain of the location, helicopter-support was utilized to transport crews and materials to each site.

Crux completed the project in early February and installed a total of 13 foundations.
