Unique modes of access for Eldorado-Ivanpah

Published on Back To Index

Crux has been selected to provide turnkey micropile foundation services for a portion of Southern California Edison’s (SCE) Eldorado-Ivanpah Transmission Project.

Crux will design and construct concrete cap micropile foundations for 20 lattice towers along the 35-mile replacement alignment. This portion of the alignment is located within mountainous terrain and construction is restricted to an eight-week window, requiring unique access methods.

The current 115 kV alignment traverses the southern California-Nevada border near Primm, NV. Several solar-rich resource areas have been identified in the region, and additional infrastructure is required to connect them to the grid. The project includes construction of a new Ivanpah substation and replacement of the existing 115 kV electric transmission line with a double-circuit 220 kV electrical transmission line.

Teaming with prime contractor PAR Electrical Contractors, Crux will employ a combination of medium-lift helicopter and Morooka rubber track carriers to reach foundation sites. Morookas have a low ground pressure of 3.9 PSI when fully loaded, enabling them to traverse the undulating terrain and unimproved roadways. Crux has customized the carriers to support either a mounted drill rig or radio controlled crane and will utilize them in place of rough terrain forklifts. Morookas are more stable on steep slopes, and the availability of a radio controlled crane onsite will provide mechanization of material and equipment handling. This will alleviate a number of heavy lifting activities from field employees, subsequently increasing overall safety and efficiency. Crux expects to utilize Marookas at twelve tower sites and medium-lift helicopter at the remaining eight.

Construction of the Eldorado-Ivanpah Transmission Project is currently underway and Crux is scheduled to begin foundation work in early February. The line is expected to be in service by July 2013.

This will be the most recent of a number of SCE projects Crux has worked on, including the Rhinedollar 12 kV Distribution Project, Devers-Palo Verde No. 2 and Tehachapi Renewable Transmission Project Segment 6.
